Welcome to the Riverside Ginkgo House
The Riverside Ginkgo House is a lovingly restored 1911 home in downtown Hinton, West Virginia, nestled between the New and Greenbrier Rivers.
Named for the three mature Ginkgo trees surrounding the property, the home was restored with a focus on preservation, authenticity, and Hinton’s architectural history. During the renovation, the designer, a graduate of Hinton High School across the street, discovered that the home had once belonged to her former English teacher, Mrs. Rudge, who taught from 1980 to 1999. Curated books, a Blenko art-glass apple, and a vintage reading desk subtly honor her legacy.
Rather than completely transforming the home, the restoration uncovered and preserved its original character. Fireplaces, flooring, beadboard, doors, stair components, millwork, and other architectural details were retained whenever possible, while the kitchen, bathrooms, plumbing, and infrastructure were thoughtfully updated for modern comfort.
Two Ginkgo trees frame the Fifth Avenue entrance alongside a geometric barn quilt commissioned from a local artist. A third Ginkgo, nearly eight feet in diameter, anchors the backyard and inspired the home’s name.
The Space
The renovated bathrooms feature new plumbing, tile, and modern fixtures. The kitchen includes a new range, microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator with 1950s-inspired styling, along with a Keurig, blender, electric kettle, and toaster oven-air fryer combination.
The dining area includes seating for six, two drop-front tables for buffet-style service, and ample china and cutlery for larger gatherings.
Guests can also enjoy a peaceful porch, vintage touches, curated books, and Starlink Wi-Fi for remote work.
Location
The home is within walking distance of downtown shops, cafés, historic sites, and the Market on Courthouse Square. Sandstone Falls, Bluestone State Park, and New River Gorge National Park are only a short drive away.
