The space

Located directly across from Hinton High School, this historic 1911 home was thoughtfully redesigned to preserve its original character while introducing modern comfort and a cohesive aesthetic inspired by the life of Mrs. Rudge, the beloved English teacher who lived here and taught generations of students from 1980–1999.

Subtle details throughout the home pay tribute to her legacy: curated books, a Blenko art-glass apple, and a vintage reading desk that keep her presence alive.

From the moment you arrive, the property stands out. Two magnificent Ginkgo trees frame the entrance on Fifth Avenue, paired with a geometric barn quilt commissioned from a local artist. In the backyard, a massive Ginkgo nearly 8 feet in diameter, anchors the landscape and inspires the name “The Ginkgo House.”

Inside, the home has been modernized with intention.

  • Renovated bathrooms with new plumbing, tile and modern fixtures.
  • Reimagined kitchen featuring a brand-new range, microwave, dishwasher and a modern refrigerator styled with 1950s vintage charm.
  • Added conveniences like a toaster oven/air fryer combo, Keurig, blender, and quick-boil electric kettle.

The dining area was designed for family gatherings and special occasions- offering a table for six, two drop-front tables for expanded buffet-style service, and ample china and cutlery for large parties.

In the heart of downtown Hinton, you’ll have easy access to local shops, cafés, and the Market on Courthouse Square — plus iconic outdoor destinations like Sandstone Falls, Bluestone State Park, and New River Gorge National Park.

This retreat is ideal for a romantic getaway, family trip, or peaceful work-from-home stay. It blends history, design, and nature into an authentic small-town mountain experience.
